Searching can be more complex than it first seems. Here are some tips:-
- The search is not case sensitive
- Short phrases such as CT or MRI do not usually produce useful results - try and be more specific.
- When searching for single words If you type a space before and after the word, the search will only be for whole words which match.
- When searching for single words If you type the word without surrounding spaces the search will include occurences within other words (ie liver in deliver or lipoma in lipomatous).
- Entering the stem of a word rather than the whole word will produce a wider search ie "mesent" rather than "mesentery" or "mesenteric".
- Spelling differences are significant ie paediatric v pediatric - need to search for both.(or see below)
- It may be necessary to try several similar words (ie renal or kidney) for a fully comprehensive search.
- Having clicked the link, if you cannot see the search word or phrase use the edit ... find facility on the browser menu
- Wildcards can be used: if you type "?" after a letter (ie ha?emorrhage) the search will include zero or one occurrences of any letter in the position of "a"
If you type "*" after a letter (ie lipoma*) the search will include zero or any number of occurences of any letter from the position of "a" until the end of the word. These can be used to search for both
spellings of haemorrhage (enter ha?emorrhage) or paediatric (enter pa?ediatric).
